School time is coming and the previous days are working days to review and take note of some suggestions related to health, food, accidents prevention and other aspects related to the care of our children. In the return to classes, the British Hospital made available to its members and users (wwww.hospitalbritanico.uy) a number of tips and reminders orientated to the promotion of health care of children and teenagers. So, at this time the typical annual pediatric control is usually done in which, when appropriate, eye and dental check should be added, as well as checking that vaccines are up to date. The frequency of medical checks depends on the child´s age. From the first year to the second, 4 annual checks are recommendable, between 2 and 4 years old, 3 annual checks, and after 5 years old, 1 annual control is recommended. The child should have ophthalmological controls between 3 and 5 years old, at the start of the school year and at school graduation at the age of 12, respectively. In terms of oral health, from 2 years old it is recommendable brushing the teeth with toothpaste after each meal, as well as 2 annual checks with the dentist. Health prevention also includes paying attention to issues such as the type and weight of school bags and children´s behavior in the school transport. School bags must have cushioned wide shoulder belts, and should not weigh more than 20% of the weight of the child, they should not be hung from one shoulder only because it may generate sprains, and those which have wheels are the most appropriate, especially if they are too heavy. In case children go to school by van they should use seat belt and avoid moving inside the vehicle, remaining in their seats and getting on and off the vehicle in appropriate places to do so. If they go by car they should use the right chair according to the age as well as the seat belt. In addition, until the age of 13 they should travel in the back seat. In case they go by bike they should wear a helmet, riding on the right and respecting traffic lights and signals, besides using an identifier to become visible. In case they go on foot, it is important to consider if the child is mature enough in order to walk alone on the street making sure whether he/she knows the way to school and feels safe. Feeding is another important issue to bear in mind. It is recommendable to make a varied menu, with lot of fruits and vegetables, keeping in mind that water is the best drink and that afternoon snacks must be checked by an adult, to make sure that they contain dairy products, cereals, fruit and bread, avoiding cookies, sandwich cookies, candy and snacks. Homework must be supervised by an adult and it is recommendable to limit the access to the computer and internet, as well as having the TV off while children are doing the task. This initiative is part of the ongoing health prevention policy that is being conducted by the British Hospital, involving professionals and staff from all the Institution departments and also develop proposals and activities that contribute to a better  life quality for its members.
